In the small town of Tulsa, Oklahoma, during the 1960s, the social hierarchy is deeply rooted in class divisions. The "Socs" (short for Socials), a group of affluent and privileged teenagers, view themselves as superior to the working-class "Greasers," who are often from lower-income families. The story centers around Ponyboy Curtis, a 14-year-old Greaser who loves to read and is fiercely loyal to his friends. He is part of a tight-knit group that includes his brothers Darry and Sodapop, as well as their friend Johnny Cade, a quiet and sensitive boy who is often overlooked by the others. One night, Ponyboy and Johnny are walking home from a movie when they are jumped by a group of Socs, led by the ruthless Cherry Valance. During the ensuing fight, Johnny kills Cherry's boyfriend, Bob, in self-defense. The two boys flee the scene, fearing retaliation from the Socs. Meanwhile, the Greasers' leader, Dallas Winston, also known as "Darry," begins to turn against Johnny, fueled by anger and a desire for retribution.
